“What’s yo’ dream?!” Pretty Woman- The Musical
I write this as I listen to the Original Broadway Cast Recording: Pretty Woman the Musical. This was mostly to get me in the mood and refresh my memory since I saw this a month ago. But what I am realising whilst listening, I kind of underrated the soundtrack! But maybe that’s a post for another day. Here I recall my thoughts on the UK musical overall at the Savoy Theatre, London UK, April 2023.
I couldn’t help compare to the musical of my first guilty pleasure Dirty Dancing, whilst I didn’t love as much I still, unlike a few bad reviews I’ve read, thought it was a big night out- HUGE!
Although I generally believe ‘comparison is the thief of joy’- (Theodore Roosevelt), unlike Patrick Swayze and Jenifer Grey of Dirty Dancing it took a while to get Richard Gere and Julia Roberts out my head. Once I did however, the portrayal of the characters were good- especially the best friend, Kit de Luca.
Played by Courtney Bowman, Kit exuded energy, vibrancy and fun and Bowman has a great voice to keep audiences stunned.
I found the set elegant and dreamy. The transitions between set changes were smooth and the scenography overall was simplistic, to the point. It definitely transported me to Hollywood!
